Dash cam video shows dangerous, high-speed Melbourne car chase

Video released Monday shows a pick truck swerving around cars, skidding into yards and driving dangerously through Melbourne and Palm Bay neighborhoods. Black smoke billowed from the back of Terry Johnson’s pickup after he fled from officers just before 6 p.m. Jan. 10. Police had attempted to pull him over near University Boulevard and Grant Street for illegal window tint, according to arrest records. The chase lasted around 25 minutes and covered 17 miles, heading as far south as Port Malabar Boulevard before Johnson’s vehicle was disabled by stop sticks near Palm Bay Road and Stack Boulevard. The dashboard video released by police Tuesday shows Johnson skidding wildly along a residential street, weaving around cars, before making his way to Palm Bay road, police said. At one point, the suspect jumps the median and drives toward oncoming traffic before pulling off the major thoroughfare onto a side street. Video shows one of the rear tires of the truck blow before the truck skids 180 degrees into the opposite lanes, slamming into another vehicle. Johnson, 39, was arrested by Melbourne police and charged with multiple counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding at a high speed, resisting arrest, possession of cocaine and possession of more than 20 grams of cannabis.
